How to Keep Your Bouquet Fresh for Longer: A Florist's Care Guide

Simple, florist-tested steps to make your flowers last days longer, written for Dubai's warm climate.

How to Keep Your Bouquet Fresh for Longer: A Florist's Care Guide

There is nothing quite like fresh flowers in your home, but in Dubai's heat they can fade faster than you would like. The good news is that with a few small habits, most bouquets and arrangements will stay beautiful for a week or longer. Here is the same care routine our florists use, distilled into steps you can follow at home.

Start with a clean vase and fresh water

Bacteria are the enemy of fresh flowers. Before your blooms go in, wash your vase with warm soapy water and rinse it well. Fill it with cool, clean water, and if your flowers came with a sachet of flower food, add it now. No food on hand? A few drops of household bleach plus a small pinch of sugar does a similar job: the sugar feeds the stems, the bleach keeps the water clear.

Cut the stems at an angle

Trim 2-3 cm off each stem at a 45-degree angle using sharp scissors or a knife. The angled cut gives a larger surface for drinking and stops stems from sitting flat on the vase base. Re-cut every two to three days when you change the water. This single habit makes the biggest difference to how long your flowers last.

Strip the lower leaves

Any leaf sitting below the waterline will rot and breed bacteria. Strip them off so only bare stem sits in the water. Your arrangement will look tidier and the water will stay clear far longer.

Keep them cool and out of the sun

This matters most in the UAE. Place your flowers away from direct sunlight, the kitchen, and anything warm. Crucially, keep them clear of air-conditioning vents, as that constant dry draft will wilt petals quickly. A bright but cool corner is ideal. Many people move their vase to a cooler room overnight to buy extra days.

Mind the fruit bowl

Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers age fast. Keep your arrangement well away from the fruit bowl and remove any spent blooms promptly so they do not affect the rest.

Match care to the flower

Different blooms have different needs. Roses, like those in the Red Heart Romance Rose & Gerbera Vase Arrangement, love deep water and frequent re-cutting. Lilies last beautifully, but pinch off the orange pollen-bearing anthers to avoid stains and prolong the bloom; the Luxe Lily Horizon responds well to this. Hydrangeas drink through their petals too, so a quick misting helps the Blush & Blue Hydrangea Bouquet stay perky.

Choose long-lasting styles when it counts

If you want maximum longevity with minimum effort, consider the format. Flower boxes and hat boxes are arranged in hidden floral foam that keeps stems hydrated, so they need only a small top-up of water every couple of days. Orchid plants are the marathon runners of the flower world, often flowering for weeks or months with just a few ice cubes of water weekly, which makes them a smart gift when you cannot guarantee daily care.

Want fresh flowers, fast?

The freshest flowers simply last longer, and freshness starts with how quickly they reach you. We offer same-day delivery across Dubai and the wider UAE, so your blooms arrive crisp rather than tired from a long warehouse stay. Browse the full Flower Corner shop to find your favourites, or explore arrangements for a birthday or anniversary when you want them to last as long as the memory.

With a clean vase, a quick daily trim, and a cool spot away from the AC, even a midweek bouquet can carry you happily through to the weekend and beyond.
